Design

I know I’ve mentioned this fact in other posts, but I’ll say it again – I love design.  All disciplines of design.  I’m especially drawn to home design, fashion, and art.  I’ve been dabbling in all 3 as much possible this year in my quest to find my next career, but most recently I’ve been assisting in home design.  And I’ve noticed that not everyone approaches design the same way.

What is Your Comfort Level in Home Design?

• A certain percentage of people have no idea what they want in a renovation or redecoration, so they hire an interior designer, which can be pricey especially if you’re on a budget.

• Another percentage, like myself, know exactly what they want and aren’t afraid to design everything themselves.

• The rest of the population then falls somewhere in between.  You are pretty sure of what you want, but aren’t 100% confident in your decision.  You need honest council from someone who’s been there before.  And you may not have the time to go look at samples, furniture, etc…

Perhaps You Just Need a Consultant

That’s where I come in.  I’ve got a good eye and esthetic, as well as a solid attention to detail (I’m technically still a dentist, you know!)  I also have done multiple renovations on my own home – not the labor part (I’m not that brave), but all of the design.  And I loved every second of it!

I’ve done big projects like a total kitchen gutting (that included removing a load-bearing wall!)

As well as smaller updates, like the guest baths on a budget…

What Can a Design Consultant Do?

Several months ago, a good friend asked if she could hire me to help her with some redecorating, as well as an upcoming home renovation.  I was excited for the opportunity!  So far I have provided consult when she was finalizing her kitchen cabinet design and choosing appliances.  I’ve also assisted her with smaller things, like picking out paint samples, and doing a “comfort check” of a sofa when she didn’t have the time to do so.  Even the smaller tasks that most people dread – or just don’t have the time for – I really enjoy!

My friend’s project will be coming to completion soon (and the end result is going to be fabulous!)  But I now realize that I would really like more of these projects.  Feel free to contact me if you, or anyone you know, may need a consult…

  1. Love, love, love the idea of a design consultant. We’re in the midst of a huge remodel/kitchen addition and I’m second-guessing some of my own design choices. Hiring an interior designer seemed like a luxury on top of the expense of remodeling, plus I really want to own the space, to feel like I can take credit for the look and feel.

But a consultant for a few hours or for a certain part of the project ? That would be very welcome.

A related service I’ve been daydreaming about: someone who can redecorate using existing furniture and decor, and edit (including deletion if necessary), or update (refurbish, re-cover) anything that doesn’t work in the space. It would be neat to see my own stuff reimagined and repurposed.

    1. I’m so glad you see the benefit of my vision/idea! And I love your idea of editing & repurposing what you already own. That’s something I’ve done for myself and friends over the years as well. I’m proud of you for owning your kitchen remodel, and I would love for you to share pics when you’re done!
